The bottled water market might appear commoditized — dominated by large multinational brands competing primarily on price and distribution. At the premium and super-premium tier, however, it operates on entirely different logic. Water brands like Acqua Panna, San Pellegrino, and Volvic in glass formats, alongside a newer generation of artisan and regional spring waters, command price premiums sustained almost entirely by positioning. And packaging is a central pillar of that positioning.
Glass is re-emerging in premium bottled water, driven by two converging forces: consumer demand for quality signals that plastic cannot provide, and growing discomfort with single-use PET that has made glass an increasingly attractive choice for brands wanting to communicate environmental responsibility alongside product quality.
The Sustainability Dimension
The environmental case for glass in bottled water is more nuanced than the marketing usually acknowledges. Glass is infinitely recyclable without quality loss, and in markets with functioning return and recycling infrastructure, a glass water bottle has a meaningfully lower lifecycle impact than a single-use PET bottle, even accounting for the transport weight differential.
In markets without strong glass recycling infrastructure, the calculus is less clear — heavier glass means more transport emissions, and if the bottle goes to landfill rather than recycling, the environmental case weakens considerably. This nuance is worth acknowledging honestly in any brand’s sustainability communication, because consumers and sustainability-focused retail buyers have become more sophisticated about lifecycle analysis claims than they were five years ago.
What glass unambiguously provides is the consumer perception of environmental responsibility — which in many market segments is as commercially valuable as the underlying reality. For water brands targeting premium on-trade channels, the sight of glass on a restaurant table or a hotel bedside communicates a values alignment with the establishment that plastic cannot replicate regardless of any accompanying claim.
Why Glass Does More Brand Work in Water Than in Any Other Beverage
Water is unusual among beverages in that the product itself is visually identical to tap water. The glass — its clarity, weight, and shape — does more brand-building work in this category than in almost any other, because there is no color, no carbonation bubble pattern visible through opaque packaging, no viscosity or head to differentiate. The bottle is the brand signal before the label is read.
This makes glass specification particularly consequential. Glass water bottles for premium positioning typically specify extra-white (low-iron) glass, which produces a cooler, cleaner visual than standard clear glass. The difference is subtle but perceptible — extra-white glass makes the water appear more pristine, reinforcing the purity narrative that premium water brands depend on.
Shape carries positioning coding in the water category as powerfully as in spirits. The VOSS cylinder has become globally recognizable as a premium water format — an object of considered design that communicates positioning before a label is read. These are not just containers; they are the primary brand communication vehicle for a product that cannot differentiate on taste through the bottle.
Still vs. Sparkling: Different Glass Requirements
Still and sparkling water have different packaging specification requirements that affect the bottle decision.
Sparkling water exerts internal pressure that still water does not. A glass specification adequate for still water will not necessarily perform reliably with a carbonated fill — pressure cycling during temperature changes in distribution can stress glass that performs acceptably under static conditions. For brands producing sparkling water in glass, requesting documented pressure performance specifications from the glass supplier, and verifying those specifications against the distribution temperature range, is standard practice worth building into the sourcing process.
The closure system also differs. Crown caps — the format used in premium beer and mineral water — provide a reliable pressure seal and a premium opening gesture for carbonated water in on-trade service. ROPP screw caps are more common for retail distribution of both still and sparkling, though the cap specification should be appropriate for the internal pressure of the carbonated product rather than a standard food closure.
The On-Trade vs. Off-Trade Dynamic
Premium glass water divides into two distribution contexts, each with different format requirements.
On-trade (restaurants, hotels, fine dining): The preferred formats are 250ml for individual table service and 500ml for shared service. The bottle will be seen on the table — it is part of the dining experience, not merely a vessel for hydration. Still and sparkling variants often use the same bottle profile with different closure or label color to allow table-side upselling without creating format complexity in the inventory.
Off-trade (specialty food retail, grocery premium tier, DTC): Format range is broader, from 250ml single-serve to 750ml and 1L for household purchase. Shrink-sleeve labels are common at the mid-premium tier; paper labels with textured substrate or embossing are used at the super-premium tier where the label is a craft element in itself.
ANT Glass produces glass water bottle formats in extra-white specification across standard and custom profiles, serving water brands and importers across more than 60 export markets. An overview of available formats is available through their beverage bottle range.
