Breakbeat Media, the hip-hop-focused media and entertainment company founded and led by The Source magazine founder Dave Mays, today announced an expansion of its growth financing facility with Applied Real Intelligence (“A.R.I.”), approximately 18 months after the companies first partnered in April 2025.

The additional capital will support Breakbeat’s continued expansion across original content, technology, live entertainment, social-first programming and branded entertainment as the company builds a multi-platform media business serving hip-hop culture’s global audience.

“A.R.I. has been a thoughtful and supportive partner since our initial financing, and this expanded relationship gives us additional resources to execute the next stage of Breakbeat’s development,” said Dave Mays, Founder and CEO of Breakbeat Media. “A.R.I. founder Dr. Zack Ellison understands our vision, believes in what we are building and recognizes the opportunity ahead of us. A.R.I.’s follow-on investment will help us continue developing our programming, technology and intellectual property as we expand the Breakbeat platform.”

The expanded financing follows a period of growth and diversification for Breakbeat as the company has extended its programming beyond podcasts into video, live events, branded entertainment and scripted social-first content.

DAVE MAYS: FROM THE SOURCE TO BREAKBEAT

Mays founded The Source magazine while attending Harvard University in the late 1980s. What began as a newsletter connected to a hip-hop radio program grew into one of the most influential publications in the world, chronicling the hip-hop genre as it developed into a global force in music and popular culture.

Known as the “Bible of Hip-Hop,” The Source became the #1 selling music magazine on newsstands in the world in the late 1990s and established an influential standard for music criticism through its signature album-rating system, the “5 Mics.” This coveted rating became the most recognized mark of critical distinction in hip-hop, while The Source Awards, also created by Mays, gave hip-hop artists a prominent nationally-televised platform during a transformative period for the genre.

Breakbeat applies Mays’ decades of experience identifying cultural shifts and building influential media properties to a new generation of media—one shaped by streaming video, social platforms, mobile technology and direct relationships between creators and global audiences.

“Media has changed enormously since I started The Source, but the opportunity remains the same: identify important voices, understand the audience and create platforms that authentically represent the culture,” Mays said. “Technology now allows us to reach audiences directly and build intellectual property across multiple platforms.”

BUILDING MULTI-PLATFORM MEDIA FRANCHISES

Among Breakbeat’s growing franchises is Still 400: The Mannie & Juvie Show, hosted by legendary artists and longtime collaborators Mannie Fresh and Juvenile. The program recently surpassed 100,000 subscribers on YouTube and has expanded into live entertainment, including live events in St. Louis and Chicago.

Breakbeat is also preparing to launch 5 Mics®, a weekly program that brings the influential album-rating concept Mays created at The Source into today’s media environment, creating a forum for substantive discussion and evaluation of important new hip-hop releases.

The company’s slate also includes Trappin Anonymous and Hit & Hers, hosted by Wild ’N Out star and battle rapper Hitman Holla and his fiancée, Cinnamon.

Breakbeat has also expanded into scripted social-first entertainment, producing The Battle of the Biscuits, a vertical short-form comedy miniseries in partnership with Church’s Texas Chicken starring Mannie Fresh, Juvenile, B.G. and Rob Kazi. The project reflects Breakbeat’s strategy of combining culturally relevant talent, original storytelling and brands in entertainment designed for mobile and social audiences.

TECHNOLOGY, CULTURE AND A GLOBAL CONSUMER AUDIENCE

Breakbeat’s longer-term strategy is based on the convergence of media, technology and the global commercial influence of hip-hop culture. Hip-hop’s influence extends beyond music into fashion, sports, entertainment and consumer behavior. Breakbeat sees an opportunity to combine culturally authentic programming with technology, data and evolving distribution platforms to deepen connections among creators, audiences and brands.

“Hip-hop has become one of the most powerful influences on global culture and consumer behavior,” Mays said. “Breakbeat is being built around that reality. We see a significant opportunity to create enduring entertainment properties for this audience while helping artists, creators and brands engage with it in ways that are authentic and commercially meaningful.”

“Dave Mays has spent more than three decades identifying cultural shifts and building successful media platforms around them,” said Dr. Zack Ellison, Founder and Managing General Partner of Applied Real Intelligence (A.R.I.). “When A.R.I. first invested in Breakbeat, we saw an experienced entrepreneur applying that perspective to a media industry undergoing significant technological and distribution changes. After working closely with Dave and his team over the past 18 months, our conviction in Breakbeat’s vision and opportunity has grown. We are pleased to provide additional growth capital to support Breakbeat’s continued development.”
