Overall, airport and life sciences freight activity increased in September as 28Freight introduces the Index to life sciences supply chain leaders at LogiPharma US

WILMINGTON, MA / ACCESS Newswire / October 6, 2026 / 28Freight today released the September 2026 New England Critical Freight Index, showing a rebound in critical freight activity following the broad-based moderation recorded in August.

Based on 28Freight’s proprietary transportation data, the New England Critical Freight Index tracks month-over-month changes in overall shipment activity, airport freight and life sciences transportation. The Index converts those changes into standardized scores, offering a consistent view of freight momentum while protecting proprietary shipment data.

The September 2026 New England Critical Freight Index found:

  • Overall shipment activity increased 5.8% from August, earning an Overall Freight Index score of +0.5.
  • Airport freight activity increased 11.3% month over month, resulting in an Airport Freight Index score of +1.0. Airport-related freight represented 24.9% of 28Freight shipment activity in September.
  • Life sciences transportation increased 5.6% from August, resulting in a Life Sciences Index score of +0.5. Life sciences shipments represented 18.7% of September activity.
  • As an external benchmark, the latest available Massachusetts Port Authority data showed Boston Logan cargo weight decreased 7.0% in August from July, resulting in a Boston Logan Cargo Index score of -1.0. September Boston Logan cargo data was not yet available for this report.

The September results reverse much of the moderation seen in August, when overall freight declined 5.7%, airport freight declined 10.8% and life sciences freight declined 5.1%. The month-over-month rebound was particularly strong in airport-related freight, which recorded the largest increase among the Index’s three proprietary measures.

“September’s results show why we developed the New England Critical Freight Index,” said Richard Marks, CEO of 28Freight. “Freight activity can move quickly from month to month, particularly in the time-critical markets we serve. By consistently tracking the same indicators, we can begin separating short-term fluctuations from longer-term trends and give our customers another perspective on what is happening across the market.”

28Freight Brings the Index to LogiPharma US

28Freight is introducing the New England Critical Freight Index to the broader life sciences supply chain community this week at LogiPharma US in Boston, where the company is exhibiting at Booth #403 and serving as an event sponsor.

The Index was developed in part to provide pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other life sciences supply chain professionals with a more timely view of freight activity in New England, one of the country’s most important life sciences markets.

“LogiPharma brings together the exact community we built this Index to serve,” Marks said. “Launching it to the industry here in Boston gives us an opportunity to share what we’re seeing in our own transportation network and, more importantly, begin a broader conversation about the freight trends affecting life sciences supply chains.”

LogiPharma attendees can meet Marks and the 28Freight team at Booth #403 to learn more about the Index and 28Freight’s approach to urgent, high-value transportation. Attendees can also stop by the booth to enter for a chance to win tickets to see the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins.

Published monthly, the New England Critical Freight Index uses a consistent methodology to track directional changes in shipment activity. It is designed to complement broader industry reporting by providing timely insight into sectors where speed, reliability and specialized handling are critical.

Each report includes the Overall Critical Freight Index, Airport Freight Index, Life Sciences Freight Index, Boston Logan cargo activity as an external benchmark, month-over-month percentage changes, historical trend analysis, and commentary on notable transportation market developments.

As additional monthly data becomes available, 28Freight will continue building the Index’s historical record, helping supply chain professionals identify trends and compare changes in New England’s critical freight market over time.
