NEW YORK – August 25, 2026 – Dr. Rajendra Bhayani, a New York-based surgeon and longtime community leader, played a prominent role in the National Alliance of Indian Organizations’ “Azadi Ka Mahotsav” on August 15, 2026. Held at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale, New York, the event brought together more than 1,000 attendees to commemorate India’s 80th Independence Day alongside the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The celebration brought together elected officials, community leaders, business executives, cultural ambassadors, and representatives of Indian-American organizations from across the country. Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi also sent a special message for the occasion, applauding NAIO’s celebration of the historic independence milestones of both nations.
For Dr. Bhayani, the gathering offered an opportunity to reinforce a message central to much of his community work: Indian Americans can accomplish more when organizations and individuals work together.
Welcoming the capacity crowd, Dr. Bhayani drew on the enduring words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
Dr. Bhayani connected the message to the future of the Indian-American community, emphasizing that greater unity can help create stronger representation, lasting influence, and collective progress across the United States.
The event also attracted prominent political leaders, including Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman; U.S. Representatives Tom Suozzi and Nick LaLota; New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox; and Nassau County Republican Committee Chairman Joseph Cairo.
Their participation reflected the celebration’s broader civic focus. While “Azadi Ka Mahotsav” commemorated two major national anniversaries, it also created a forum for strengthening relationships among Indian-American organizations, elected officials, policymakers, and community leaders.
The program reinforced that goal throughout. Mr. Harry Singh Bolla spoke about the importance of unity and stronger relationships with elected representatives. Mr. Chintu Patel announced an initiative to establish a $100 million fund intended to strengthen the impact, representation, and influence of Americans of Indian origin. Mr. Naveen Shah presented a broader vision for bringing Indian communities and organizations throughout the country together on a national platform.
For Dr. Bhayani, those discussions aligned closely with years of work to strengthen connections within the Indian-American community while building bridges between India and the United States.
A National Celebration of Culture and Community
The “Azadi Ka Mahotsav” program ran from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and combined civic engagement with a celebration of Indian heritage and culture.
Inspirational artist Sparsh Shah opened the program, followed by cultural presentations featuring traditional and contemporary Indian arts. Internationally acclaimed designer Rohit K. Verma presented a fashion show, while Shilpa Jhutani, Rimli Surati, and the Dhwani group were among the performers who entertained the capacity crowd.
Founder Trustees and distinguished leaders, including Dr. Bharat Barai, Mr. Danny Gaekwad, Mr. Subhash Patel, and Maa Rajyalaxmi, traveled from outside New York to participate, further reflecting the national scope of the gathering.
A curtain raiser and media conference was also held ahead of the main celebration at the Consulate General of India in New York. The event was chaired by Consul General Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, helping set the stage for the dual commemoration.
NAIO, established in March 2026, represents more than 100 Indian-American organizations and over 300 community leaders. Its mission of building a more unified national platform closely reflects the kind of community-building work Dr. Bhayani has pursued throughout his public service.
Decades of Service to Indian and American Communities
Dr. Bhayani’s participation in “Azadi Ka Mahotsav” builds on years of community organizing and philanthropic work. He previously served as a key organizer for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the Indian-American community at Madison Square Garden in September 2014, an event that brought diaspora members together on a major national stage.
Alongside his medical career, Dr. Bhayani has devoted substantial time to civic and philanthropic initiatives. He has served on the boards of more than 20 community organizations and associations and has participated in initiatives involving healthcare, education, road safety, cultural engagement, and community development.
His efforts have included organizing health and blood donation camps, supporting fundraisers for Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meal program, and participating in the Football for Nation initiative in Delhi to raise funds for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He has also served on the Board of Trustees of SaveLIFE Foundation, an organization working to improve road safety and protect people who assist accident victims.
Medical Career Supports a Life of Service
Dr. Bhayani has built his professional career in ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery while maintaining an extensive commitment to community service. His medical background includes training in neurosurgery and a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Microvascular Surgery.
He has published and presented more than 50 research papers and has received numerous professional and community honors throughout his career. His recognition has included awards for both medical research and his contributions to Indian-American civic life.
Rather than treating his medical and community work as separate pursuits, Dr. Bhayani has consistently approached both through the lens of service. His involvement in “Azadi Ka Mahotsav” continues that work by helping create opportunities for Indian Americans to celebrate their heritage while participating more actively in American civic life.
Strengthening Diaspora Unity
The August 15 celebration ultimately represented more than an anniversary for Dr. Bhayani. It reflected a larger question that has shaped much of his community involvement: how can a diverse diaspora maintain its cultural connections while building a stronger collective voice in the United States?
Bringing more than 1,000 people together offered one answer.
Through cultural celebration, civic engagement, and dialogue among community and political leaders, “Azadi Ka Mahotsav” demonstrated the potential for Indian-American organizations to work across regional and organizational boundaries.
For Dr. Bhayani, the message expressed during his remarks was simple. Unity is not merely symbolic. It can become the foundation for stronger representation, deeper community ties, and greater participation in the civic life of the United States.
